This thread is for a discussion of which rules we, as a club, should adopt for the Ancient period.
Most members have an interest in fighting games in this period but at the moment games are rarely fought, which is a pity.
I intend to start the ball rolling with a number of suggestions and my biased opinion of them.
All members are invited to join in.
Just continuing with the list: Hail Caesar - A relatively new set of rules I have yet to play. At first glance it seems to be based on WAB principles and is similar to the Black Powder horse & musket rules we have used at the club. This may be a popular choice. Classical Hack - I used these for a Successor v Roman Republic game a few years ago. They played well for the pike based army but the rules for the Romans were over complex. Not to be dismissed for early period games though. WRG Ancients Rules 6th & 7th Edition - We old timers know these well and they have always had a strong following. 6th edition is available again and 7th edition is still in print, I think. 7th has also produced two spin-off versions; Warrior ; a US version designed to be easier to understand & Might of Arms described somewhere as 7th Edition Lite. I prefer 6th to 7th as I never realy liked the order system in 7th edition. One point to note; the army lists for WRG rules are a good starting point for preparing armies under any rule set.
Many members already have armies in either 15mm or 28mm. These range from early Greeks right through to the medieval period. I know it will be difficult to find a set of rules that give the flavour for such a vast range but I'll start with a few examples. DBA - suitable for their purpose but limited in the type of game portrayed. DBM & DBMM - using the same basing as DBA but I really do dislike them. Warhammer Ancient Battles - these appeal to players moving up from Warhammer & W40K as the mechanics are similar. I have used these for the Dark Age period, which they suit, but the multiple dice rolls are annoying. The superhuman personalities can annoy some players. Impetus/Basic Impetus - I have been trying these out. They are a step up from DBA. Armies require fewer figures than some rules for a good looking game, which should appeal to newer/younger members. Clash of Empires - Based on Warhammer Ancient Battles with the same good and bad points.
