Call of Cthulhu - Character Generation Notes There are 4 replies

Ok for those who don’t know here’s an overview of the character generation process ...
(just an overview, I’m guessing you have some idea of what’s involved and I’ll run through the detail later)
Determine Characteristics
We will do this on a Saturday or Tuesday night, takes 15 minutes. Basically you roll 3D6 for each of the characteristics Strength (STR), Constitution (CON), Power (POW), Dexterity (DEX) and Appearance (APP). You then roll 2D6+6 for Size (SIZ) and Intelligence (INT). Finally you roll 3D6+3 for Education (EDU).
I have a slightly adjusted system that gives you the chance of getting a few extra points to play with and I may let you swop a couple of points about if needs be to fit in with the characters background and occupation.
There is an option of adding 10 years on to your starting age of EDU+6 ... but if you hit 40 then other physical stats will suffer.
Calculations

Next there’s a few calculations based on your stats. All computation e.g. Sanity (SAN) = POW x 5 and Hit Points = (CON + SIZ) / 2

Occupation & Skills

There are a number of skills on your character sheet, 50 or so, that your character can know. Each one has a base score linked to a characteristic. You can then add points to improve the skills. The system is percentile based, you need to roll less than the skill score to succeed at a task. Very low rolls, “criticals”, score better than normal results.

Your occupation is important for 2 reasons; firstly it provides a limited list of occupational skills to which you can allocate EDU x 20 points too. Secondly it will provide a number of less tangible game play benefits (or hindrances). For example, if you are a Gangster then you might be able to source the team some guns without any trouble BUT you may also find it hard to deal with the authorities, “quick Officer over here, a man’s been injured”, “hey, don’t I know you ... hold it right there, hands where I can see them!” ... see?

You also get some personal points to allocate across any skills equal to INT x 10. You can put these anywhere, but if you are a mechanic and decide to put 30 points in to Latin ... well just come up with a story as to how and why your character knows Latin.

Just a word of warning about occupations ... I have all the occupational templates listed in another post. You don’t have to use these, you can come up with something else BUT please bear in mind that some are more suitable to running around the world that others

Background

This is the real important stuff, the who why and what of your character.

I don't need to read it Mike, i've lived it. Going to Ramsey was something Douglas lads did for a dare. Needless to say, some never returned ...

One day you must read my thesis on the critical comparison of the cultures of Ramsey, Isle of Man and Innsmouth, USA.
I wouldn't dare to venture out "on the lash" in such a haunt.

It's started already. I feel my sanity beginning to drain and those eyes watching me from the shadows. No, no, not again!
